Night Time Routine that will change your life!

There was a point in my life when planning the next day or setting goals seemed to be just a waste of time.  When I would hear the cheesy motivational speeches about having a vision for your future, I truly never understood the importance of it. After two years in college, I became a workaholic who forgot to live, socialize, eat healthy, get enough sleep and was focused on the future to the point where I sometimes would miss on learning from my own experiences and mistakes.

Here is what I think you should try to do before going to bed that would change your life:

1. No caffeine after 6 p.m.

Too much caffeine stresses your body leading to lack of sleep and weak immune system. Try to get enough sleep and drink a lot of water throughout the day to make sure you are hydrated and have a good night of sleep.

2. Set goals for the next day

Get an agenda or planner and plan your next day! By doing so you are preparing yourself for the next day and if you try to stick to your agenda then trust me, it will pay off.

3. Shower before bed instead of the next morning.

I know some people prefer to take a shower in the morning because they workout ( you can still do that) but for those that don’t then just take a shower before going to bed. You are saving yourself some time and energy in the morning. Also, nothing feels better than waking up feeling refreshed!

4. Prepare lunch the night before

That’s right! Don’t make up excuses that you don’t have time in the morning to make yourself a healthy lunch. If you really want to be healthy then you will find the time for it. There are tons of healthy lunch ideas ( i’ll post few soon on this blog), your body will thank you for it!

5. Choose your outfit the night before

I know you are super tired and picking out an outfit the night before might be the last thing you want to do but try to make this into a habit. Not only you will look good but you will also feel good about yourself!

6. Shut down all electronic devices an hour before bedtime.

I know it’s tough to do so, but you need to do it in order to fall asleep at the right time and ensure you get a good night of sleep. We are surrounded by social media and electronics all day long, give your body a break from it and just relax by reading a book or meditating and your body will thank you for it!

7. Spritz some lavender spray on your pillow and sheets.

Lavender has great benefits and spritzing your pillows and sheets with it will calm you and give you a great night of sleep.

8. Have very few lights on.

As it’s getting closer to your bedtime, try to have as little light on as possible. This way your internal circadian biological clock will prepare you for sleep.

You might not be able to do all of them at once and it will take some time to get used to it, but soon, you will notice the great benefits that come with doing what I mentioned above.

For me, every single night ends with reflection on what went right or wrong that day. Of course overthinking would do more harm than good so try to balance things out and not overdo it. I think about how I could have done something better or what is the outcome of my decision that I have made that day. I think about how I treated people and if there’s something I did wrong that I shouldn’t have done. The last thing that I try to think of before I go to sleep is what I’m thankful for. We focus so much on the negativity and problems around us that we forget to count our blessings, so before going to bed, think about what you are thankful for. It helps me understand that at the end of the day, someone is going through worse or that I still have a lot more than I think.
